Alex Gage, who owns practices in Woodseats and Crosspool, specialises in Sports Vision and is one of only a handful of optometrists in the North of England to have earned a diploma in the subject. He said: “I was very proud to be invited to work with the GB Boxing Team at the EIS and hope that regular screening will help to safeguard the boxers’ vision.
“Boxers can be more at risk for developing conditions like retinal detachment due to the nature of the sport and using the OCT 3D digital retinal imaging camera is a fantastic way to monitor for early signs of damage.”
During the initial screening, Alex created baseline measurements for all of the boxers that will be assessed against the results of the latest, and future screenings.
Alex concluded: “It’s not just elite athletes who can benefit from a sports vision assessment, but anyone looking to improve their sports performance in general.”
