Keeping it in the family

Updated: May 19, 2022

We’re delighted to share that Alex and Sarah’s elder daughter, Emma, has graduated from Cardiff University with a 2:1 degree in Optometry and Vision Sciences.

Following in her parents’ footsteps, 22 year old Emma graduated after a three year course and will begin a pre-registration job in Merthyr Tydfil in September, further to additional studies in 2021.

Alex and Sarah met when studying optometry in Manchester in the 1990s.

Due to Covid-19, Emma had to take her final exams at home and missed out on the post exam celebrations and graduation, but it hasn’t dampened her desire for a career in optometry: “ After my pre-reg year, I definitely want to go on to do further training in a postgraduate course as Cardiff University Optometry offer a wide range of specialised courses.”

When she’s not studying and working, Emma keeps in check mentally and physically by swimming, running and going to the gym. When time permits, she adds horse riding and netball into the mix.

Proud dad, Alex added: “Emma has worked so hard and done so well to achieve her degree. We’re so proud of her. She didn’t even let the bombshell diagnosis of dyslexia at the end of her first year put her off track: she worked with the University to get the help she needed and ploughed on to achieve a 2:1 honours degree.”

Alex and Sarah’s younger daughter, Katie, is studying medicine at Nottingham.
